Odawas
The Aether Eater
The Three-Headed Dog poetry and music nights in Bloomington, Indiana were quite legendary by the time we were able to play a few songs at one in 2004. They were hosted by Chris Welz and Andrew Kenower (the first of many times he and I would cross paths). They took place in the basement studio of Brad Cash and we must have done something right because he offered to record us on the spot.
I had recently become enamored with Dante’s Inferno and it made sense to craft a loose concept album around it in the cheap, orchestral acid-folk style Odawas was perfecting. With unlimited studio time available, it also made sense to incorporate hollow logs, handmade wind chimes, and backward phonetic speech. On a trip to a thrift store, I found some walkie-talkies, which were obviously included. An assortment of friends were invited to drop by, some of whom knew how to play the instruments they brought into the studio, but that was by no means a requirement.
While all of this was going on, I was working in the mailroom at Secretly Canadian/Jagjaguwar. When a rough cut of the album somehow made its way to the upstairs offices, it didn’t seem ethical to release an album by an employee so I was asked to quit before the album was released.
