The Blue Depths

I was living in Chicago when singer-songwriter Justin Vollmar emailed suggesting that I check out the Luc Besson film The Big Blue and pay particular attention to its score by Éric Serra. He thought perhaps I had reached similar conclusions as to what music should sound like. He was right and I was profoundly changed. I bought a nylon string guitar and detuned it two whole steps and began to fall in love with the ambient and the saccharine. Songs were written to the internal rhythm tracks on a cheap Yamaha keyboard that conveniently had a “movie soundtrack” setting. Most mixing and overdubbing was completed in Isaac Edwards’ Rogers Park SRO. By the time the album was released, we had moved to Berkeley, California.
